It was a wild Saturday for Ohio State Buckeye fans.
In the NCAA Wrestling Championships, the Buckeyes were in contention for the team National Championship, until Bo Nickal pined Ohio State’s Myles Martin in exciting fashion to clinch the title for the Nittany Lions.
At the same time, Martin was wrestling for a national championship, the basketball team was trying to claw their way back into contention with Gonzaga in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. After starting the game on a 13-0 run, Gonzaga was able to hang on for a 90-84 win. The Buckeyes end their season at 25-9, after being picked to finish 12th in the Big Ten in the preseason.
Just after 10:00 PM Saturday, maybe the most accomplished Buckeye since Jesse Owens, Kyle Snyder, took the mat one final time to wrestle for the heavyweight National Championship.
Snyder, who won a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and was already a two-time NCAA champion, was wrestling Michigan’s Adam Coon for the title. Coon, who beat Snyder in the regular season, outweighs the Olympian by over 60 pounds. But grabbed two points near the end of the match to grab his third and final National Championship.
On top of all of this going on at the same time, the Ohio State men’s hockey team was playing Notre Dame in the Big Ten Championship Game. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes would fall 3-2 in overtime.
It wasn’t all bad on the ice, however, as Ohio State was named a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. They’ll play Princeton in the first round on Saturday at 3:30 PM in Allentown, PA.
All in all, one National Championship, a National Runner-Up, a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and a #1 seed in the NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament…it wasn’t a bad weekend for Buckeye fans.
